Ok I was recently reminded that this exists (i-I think someone DA-famous linked it or something because WHAT) and I think this may be relevant to tumblr’s interests so here’s my~female body variation tutorial~ whoo~

This came from some things I scribbled down when I was trying to keep my character designs consistent, and I realised that it kinda made me see bodies/proportions somewhat differently so I pasted it into this smarmy old tutorial, now cut up into (I hope) tumblr-friendly chunks so right-click for full size I think? (disclaimer: I don’t know anything and it is so far past my bedtime that it’s been tomorrow for a whole day so I’m going to nap and then maybe regret posting this.)

fig. 1: Here is a picture of two female skulls, the one on the left is Asian and the right is Caucasian. You can see that the nasal bone (bridge) is different but the highlighting and contouring is the same. The biggest difference is the eye area. You can’t really see it but the small difference makes the biggest difference when it comes to Asian eyes. The red arrows point to the area that is like a “hinge” of the eye. From the front the line of the crease falls into it. For Asians, that is the area that appears to stretch the eye. This little part can change the eye dramatically. Okay, maybe not the magical dramatic but more of an “aha” type of dramatic. (More in a future post!) Feel that area, it is like a dent. As you turn your head it is more like a ” > “. That is the area where the eye and crease corner meet. Asians you have the same but the dent is smaller, way smaller. Asian monolids, you have it too. Feel that area and remember it! (I know I am repeating myself!)

fig. 2: In the next picture, I enhanced the eye area of both skulls more by bringing up the contrast and changing it to black and white. You can see that area (marked with red) is deeper and bigger on the Caucasian skull and on the Asian one it is small and flatter but it is still apparent . This area is like, I mentioned before, the hinge of the eye, well one of the hinges, the other is the tear duct area. The depth of the hinge gives the crease.

fig. 3: Taking the same skull picture and showing only the orbital area, I have colored the “hinge” area in yellow and thecorner of the eye in white. In the Caucasian orbital structure, the hinge is deeper making the depth of the crease deeper. Asians the hinge is more narrow making the eye look more elongated. (You notice how I mention this so many times.) Now think of that hinge as the side of the eye. Now look at the area I colored in white, that is the corner of the eye. On Asians, that area appears more to the side since the eye is elongated. On Caucasians, that area appears higher which it is due to the angle of the bone.

fig. 4: Feel the hinge area with your finger or take a brush, follow that and it will curve upward (that is the corner and it is also the area that arches your brow.) You will also notice that the orbital bone domes into the eyeball (fleshy) area (it has been sculpted to curve into the hollow). Asians may have a tough time finding the differentiation between the corner and the hinge because they are both so small but they are there, you will feel the eye bone curve upward; it may be small but it will turn into the corner of your eye. As soon as your finger or brush stops curving, that becomes the front plane of your eye.

I’ve finally decided to make one because I was getting so many questions on HOW to animate. To be blunt, I only know how to animate one way (timeline animation) in one program (photoshop (cs5)) so if you want an in-depth explanation then you’d be better doing a simple google search. Nevertheless, here’s my basic tutorial.

The first step is to open up Photoshop and go to “File” > “New” to make a new document.

Choose your width and height and leave all the other options alone.

Go to “Window” > “Animation” to reveal the animation panel. You should also click on “Layers” if it’s not already up.

You’ll get something that looks like this. And in the animation panel it will either specify (timeline) or (frames)

On the top-right of the animation panel, there’s the setting controls.

If you’re already on Frame Animation, the setting will read “Convert to Timeline Animation” and vice versa. Then you’ll want to change the document settings to your liking. By default mine is always set to 10 seconds at 30 fps (frames-per-second) so I change it to 1 second at 24fps.

Make a new layer. All new layers will show up in the timeline, and whichever layer you are set to work on will be highlighted. The green bar shows how long that layer is on/showing. Above that is the frame count.

Making sure you’re on “Layer 1”, draw something fabulous.

Or not.

In the animation panel, grab the right side of Layer 1’s green bar and shrink it down to last 2 frames. When people say it’s animated on 2’s, they mean that every drawing is held for 2 frames. You can make it last however long you like, but keep it an even number of frames for REASONS.

For this particular tutorial, I won’t be animating much so just make a duplicate of Layer 1 and move the “Layer 1 copy” in the animation panel so it will appear after “Layer 1” like so

On “Layer 1 copy” I adjust the drawing as I need to. In this case, I’ll be making the person blink so I lower the eyelids a bit.

I repeat the process, making the character close their eyes on the next layer.

Then I make a copy of “Layer 1 copy” (eyes half open) and move that to the end, and finally make a copy of “Layer 1” so that she will have her eyes fully open and the image will loop seamlessly. The final layer I stretch to last the rest of the duration of the animation.

And the animation is done. All that’s left to do is export it which can be done one of two ways depending on what you need it for. For a gif, go to “File” > “Save for Web & Devices…” and it will give you the option to choose how it renders, what colours it uses, and if you want it to loop forever. To export it as a movie file (.avi .mov .mp4 etc), go to “File” > “Export” > “Render Video”

That’s it. The final product of this tutorial looks like this.

Wow FINALLY a decent reference of the muscles on the female figure WITHOUT the breast content. It has always bothered me that they always have to include the breasts when showing the muscle anatomy on the female body, considering breasts vary in size and shape a lot and isn’t even muscles to begin with.

The navigator who made you orgasm every time she appeared onscreen is Navigation Officer Darwin, played by Aisha Hinds.

The BAMF with the white hair is unnamed (but give fandom like five minutes, just you wait). She was played by Jodi Johnston and was credited as “U.S.S. Enterprise Bridge Crew.” This was Jodi’s first film, but if you want to see more of her, check out her modeling work under the name Jodi Ilene.

The android / cybernetically enhanced humanoid is Science Officer 0718, played by Joseph Gatt. (Fun fact: Gatt is a model and is super pretty without his shirt on.)

Also, Cupcake is back, and he’s actually credited as “Cupcake” this time instead of “Burly Cadet”! His real name is Hendorff, and he’s played by Jason Matthew Smith.

And last but never least, Madeline, played by Kimberly Broumand (née Kimberly Arland). This cap is from Star Trek (2009), but if anyone has a screencap of her from Into Darkness, please feel free to reblog and add it!
